Exploring space

I forget where I first read these words, but I vividly remember the impact they had on me,

"The most moral activity of all is the creation of space for life to move around" (Robert M. Pirsig)

In this one statement, Prisig summed-up, for me, a whole array of inter-connected activities, thoughts, choices and dreams that have been drifting around in the ether of my life for a while. My mind flicked from one aspect of my life to another as I mused on the implications of these words.

"... the creation of space for life to move.."

  • As a landscape architect I think in terms of physical spaces. How can I best create space for human-life and wild-life, for culture, for nature, for creation and creativity?
  • As a husband and father, how can I create space for my family to live and grow and move around with the respect, care and love that they need?
  • Working as a mediator and with organisations in conflict, how can I create a safe and healing space for people to begin to work through their conflict? What does this space look like, feel like, sound like or how is it best used?
  • In my own life, how do I find, nurture or create the space that I need to live life as fully as I am able? On my post-religious journey, where might I find the space that was lacking in my life?
  • How and where do other people find and experience space? What does their space look and feel like? What kind of space do they need?
As I explore and reflect on these and other aspects of '"creating space for life to move", I will endeavor to commit some of my musings to this blog.

My ultimate aim? To create space for life to move around (of course!). What this looks like at the moment is anyone's guess...
